The Manawatu region is the beneficiary of a decision of the UCI, cycling’s governing body, to continue to grant the New Zealand Cycle Classic international status at its new location. Previously the classic was based in Wellington, and later it was concentrated in the Wairarapa till race director Jorge Sandoval’s decision to take it to the Manawatu from January 2012.

For the last twenty four years, New Zealand’s premier cycle race and only UCI event in New Zealand, the International Tour of Wellington has taken place in the Wellington/Wairarapa region. As from January 2012 and thanks to the valuable sponsorship of Palmerston North City Council and Sports Manawatu, the tour will take place in the Manawatu region with a different name and new stages.
